Bundestag President Julia Klöckner (CDU) has warned against hastily initiating ban proceedings against the Alternative for Germany (AfD). Speaking to Stern, Klöckner stated that the conclusion must be carefully considered, emphasizing that there are strict legal regulations and high thresholds for such a ban. She argued that a procedure should not be launched simply based on instinct or emotion, but must instead be grounded in facts. Furthermore, she cautioned that attempting a ban could be entirely counterproductive-it could transform a party into a martyr if the ban ultimately fails. She stressed that careful weighing of options is the required task, and noted her position merely as an observer rather than offering a formal recommendation, insisting that this level of professional reliability is crucial in the execution of her duties. Klöckner maintained that, in principle, it is possible for AfD politicians to head Bundestag committees. While she is entitled to propose a candidate for the election, she clarified that the outcome of any secretive vote, whether for a committee chairmanship or the presidency of the German Bundestag, is ultimately decided by the individuals casting their ballots in secret.
