President Donald Trump announced the cancellation of the planned live broadcast of the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan. Hasan was a perpetrator who killed 13 people at the Fort Hood military base in 2009, and he was sentenced to death by a military court in 2013.
On his platform, Truth Social, Trump stated, “I think a public broadcast of the execution could have had a strong deterrent effect-the world could have seen how America handles terrorists and scum like Hasan. But many decent and well-meaning people probably don’t want to see him die-neither via livestream nor in any other way.”
Hasan is scheduled to be executed by firing squad as planned, but the event will not be broadcast. Trump added that the closest members of the victims’ families will be able to attend the execution in person if they wish, stating that “They deserve to witness justice being served.”
The execution marks the first military execution since 1961 and the first military firing squad since 1945. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had previously announced that the execution would be public, which had last occurred in the United States in 1936.
