Mützenich Urges Unified European Push for Ukraine Peace While Demanding Increased Defense Investment

Former SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich has advocated for intensified diplomacy by European nations as a means to end the war in Ukraine. Writing to the media network “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland,” Mützenich stated that it is unrealistic to assume the conflict will be decided solely on the battlefield, emphasizing the necessity of presenting a strong, independent European voice.

While Mützenich acknowledged that Russian President Vladimir Putin currently shows little willingness toward negotiations and suggested that diplomatically fruitful moments may not be present right now, he stressed the importance of Europe demonstrating its readiness to talk. He praised the recent meeting between Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, calling it “right and courageous,” arguing that even if it doesn’t yield immediate results, the effort was worthwhile. He added that it would be beneficial if this encounter led to a cohesive European initiative.

Furthermore, the foreign policy expert urged for effective use of funds in defense projects and strongly cautioned against budget cuts in development aid. He argued that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine highlighted Europe’s fundamental need to be capable of defending itself. “More investment in our security and military capabilities is essential for this,” Mützenich stated, adding that the finances must be used effectively, ensuring the German Armed Forces receive the defensive capabilities they actually require. He also called for stronger coordination across Europe in this area.

However, he cautioned against simultaneous austerity. Mützenich noted that cutting funds for humanitarian aid, development cooperation, and climate protection during these times would be counterproductive. He concluded that a forward-looking security policy must also take into account the underlying causes of crises and wars.
