France Protest Escalates: 1,200 Arrests Amid Nationwide Demonstrations and Public Disorder

Authorities reported Sunday night that the national protests in France have led to an increase in arrests, with the number now at least 1,200.

The scale of the day was massive, with an estimated 550,000 people taking to the streets during the course of the day, though organizers even claimed the total participation reached 800,000. Violent scenes occurred in several cities, including Lille, Marseille, and Lyon. Specific incidents included the setting of cars on fire and the destruction of shop windows in Paris, the burning down of the town hall in Limoges, and looting of businesses in Nice.

The French government described the events as an “escalation of violence.” Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu stated that at least 150 police officers were injured during the unrest. The Ministry of Interior highlighted targeted acts of violence committed by masked individuals in cities such as Marseille, Rennes, Toulouse, and Angers. Furthermore, President Emmanuel Macron announced that anyone attacking or looting buildings and businesses would face criminal prosecution and punishment.

Under the rallying cry of “On en a marre” (“We are fed up”), the demonstrations initially began with students and teachers who were protesting for more teaching staff, smaller classes, better school conditions, and fair allocations for university places. During the nationwide demonstration, the “Yellow Vests” participants and union support also joined the movement. Given the ongoing budget discussions, the demonstrations also focused heavily on the high cost of living, particularly the price of gasoline.
