Macron Refuses Interior Minister Resignation Amid France’s Escalating Protest Violence

Following the escalation of violence during protests in France, President Emmanuel Macron has rejected the request for resignation from his Interior Minister, Laurent Nunez. The Élysée Palace announced on Monday that Nunez had tendered his resignation to the president on Sunday. Macron declined the resignation, citing the “necessity to maintain the leadership of the security forces during this time.”

Instead, Nunez has been required to take immediate steps to ensure “transparency” regarding failures in planning and information gathering that contributed to the violent incidents. Furthermore, he must implement “new deployment methods” for security forces to handle the ongoing crisis.

Nunez had previously accepted responsibility for the escalations, admitting that security authorities had experienced a “loss of control.” The unrest that took place over the weekend in several cities saw cars set on fire and shop windows destroyed, with the historic town hall in Limoges also burning down. In total, at least 2,400 people were arrested during the riots.
