State Leaders Press Berlin for Electricity Tax Cuts, Proposing Oil Windfall Tax to Fund Relief

Manuela Schwesig, the Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and an SPD politician, is increasing pressure on the federal government regarding the reduction of the electricity tax, stating that life must remain affordable. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, Schwesig emphasized that both citizens and businesses need relief from high energy prices.

She confirmed that the federal government reached an agreement early this year-at the formation of the current cabinet-to lower the electricity tax. According to the SPD politician, the state prime ministers pushed for this reduction to happen as quickly as possible during last week’s Prime Ministers’ Conference.

Schwesig hopes the federal government will now present a joint proposal. Regarding how the tax reduction could be financed, she suggested that a windfall tax on the excess profits of oil corporations could contribute to covering the costs.
