In the ongoing debate about reducing the electricity tax for all, Katharina Dröge, head of the Green parliamentary group, has directed sharp criticism at Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU). Speaking to the Rheinische Post, Dröge argued that the ongoing “drama” surrounding the electricity tax-which has been promised and continuously broken-is growing increasingly absurd. She warned that if the tax reduction is not implemented now, it will represent another severe blow to the trust placed in Chancellor Merz, criticizing him for repeatedly disappointing the realities of the coalition with grand announcements.
According to the Green politician, the reduction of the electricity tax is long overdue, particularly with energy prices remaining high. She emphasized that families could save roughly 100 euros annually, and that the cost of operating electric cars or using heat pumps would also become cheaper. Dröge asserted that the necessary funds were already available. However, she further accused Merz and Klingbeil of repeatedly prioritizing expensive fuel discounts benefiting oil corporations, and of instead using funds to support pricey campaign promises made by Markus Söder.
