Laschet Demands Israeli Government Shun Extremists to Advance Peace Process Ahead of Key Elections

Armin Laschet, the chairman of the Bundestag’s Foreign Affairs Committee (CDU), is demanding that a new Israeli Prime Minister form a government free of far-right ministers. Speaking on the “Politico” magazine podcast “Berlin Playbook,” Laschet stated that he expects, “a government to form without far-right ministers, without ministers who incite against the Palestinians in an irresponsible manner, such as Ben-Gvir.”

The chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee stressed the necessity of returning to a state where dialogue can advance the peace process. He called for respectful engagement with both Israel and the Palestinians, stating that the diplomatic environment should not include “gaffes like those heard from some of Netanyahu’s ministers in recent years.”

Looking toward the election scheduled for Tuesday, the CDU politician expressed notable support for the challenger Gadi Eisenkot. Laschet commented: “External intervention in elections is never pleasant. But Eisenkot is an experienced, competent politician, and he would likely symbolize a stronger and better new beginning for Israeli politics.”

Laschet sees a potential change in government as a vital signal, particularly for Europe, because support for Israel has “dramatically declined,” and a fresh start would help reverse that trend. Although he stated that he would cooperate with Netanyahu if he were to win the election-framing it as “that is what democracy is”-the CDU politician believed that a visible shift would be the better signal for Israel itself.
