Youth Surge: Students Plan Berlin Protest Targeting Education Crisis and Uncertain Future

The Federal Student Conference plans to stage its own demonstration in Berlin on November 20th. General Secretary Amy Kirchhoff announced to RTL and ntv on Thursday that the conference will organize a protest in Berlin, which will operate as a “civil society alliance.” The Education and Science Union (GEW), the Federal Parents’ Council, and Fridays for Future have already committed to joining, with other organizations being approached. It is also possible that other locations could participate in the Berlin demonstration.

The young generation is fiercely frustrated by those in power who have failed to listen to them, making decisions about their lives without involving them. The struggles concern deteriorating schools, pension security, and the job market. Many young people no longer believe that their future prospects will be better than those of their parents-a belief that is currently dissolving and fading away.

Kirchhoff also commented on the protests held last Saturday by the student organization, stating that the group had distanced itself from them. She explained this was due to unclear organizational structures behind the “Gen Z regelt” initiative and expressed concern over potential unrest. “Violence is not a solution,” Kirchhoff stressed, insisting instead that dialogue must take place. She argued that the older generation must take responsibility, listen, and act upon the wishes of young people. Although they support the fundamental goals through peaceful protest, the student organization firmly intends to advocate for the intense anger, frustration, and the wish for increased investments, especially in education.
