German Antitrust Office Concerns Over Investor Takeover Trend in Doctor Practices

The Federal Cartel Office views the increasing role of investors in Medical Care Centers (MVZ) with concern. Andreas Mundt, the president of the Federal Cartel Office, told the “Bild-Zeitung” that he is worried about the growing number of MVZs coming under the control of institutional investors. He noted that this trend can allow individual providers to establish strong regional market positions. However, he added that the Federal Cartel Office is unable to investigate many of these takeovers. According to Mundt, this is because the takeovers cannot be scrutinized if they fall below specific legal turnover thresholds. The primary reason for this limitation is that the acquired practices typically do not reach the minimum required revenue of 17.5 million Euros.
