JSUD backs CDU politician Karin Prien for German Presidency, citing anti-right-wing stance

The Jewish Student Union Germany (JSUD) has put forward CDU politician Karin Prien as a candidate for the position of Federal President. JSUD President Ron Dekel told Spiegel that while Prien belongs to the conservative wing of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), she simultaneously maintains a clear stance against the far-right AfD party.

Dekel elaborated that since the selection is intended to feature a candidate from within the CDU camp, it is vital to consider voices from that political sphere who clearly stand against right-wing extremism. Because of this commitment, he deems her a person who is suitable for the office of Federal President in today’s climate.

Furthermore, Dekel noted that Prien possesses a deep, biographical understanding of the consequences and dangers associated with far-right extremists gaining political power. On a personal note, Prien is Jewish, though she is not religiously observant, and her grandparents had been forced to flee Germany during the Nazi era.
