A significantly high turnout rate among US citizens residing in Germany is anticipated leading up to the upcoming US midterm elections. Matthew LeMieux, the vice chairman of Democrats Abroad Germany, told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (noz) that he senses a much greater willingness to participate compared to the last midterm election. The official state committee for the US Democrats is actively encouraging US citizens in Germany to register to vote and cast their ballots via postal mail.
LeMieux further noted that the votes cast by Americans living abroad could make a decisive difference in particularly competitive states, citing historical evidence. Traditionally, the motivation to complete the administratively complex process of voting by mail from overseas has been higher during presidential elections than during midterms. However, LeMieux stated to the “noz” that the situation is different this year, adding that “democracy in the USA is alive.”
Estimates suggest there are currently around 150,000 eligible US citizens living in Germany.
