Germany Charts Ambition to Become AI Powerhouse by 2030

The German government aims to transform Germany into a “sovereign AI nation” by 2030, thereby narrowing the gap with leading AI hubs like the United States and China. According to the results report from the AI Taskforce, cited by Politico, the next twelve to eighteen months are considered crucial for setting the strategic path. This report is scheduled to be presented to the National Security Council today and introduced at the Digital Summit this afternoon.

The federal government established the AI Taskforce in June to better coordinate its distributed AI projects across various ministries, with the Ministry of Digital Affairs taking the lead. The forthcoming report outlines the outcome of this work, proposing 18 cross-ministry measures.

By 2030, the targets include having at least 80 percent of large companies and 55 percent of small and medium-sized enterprises using AI, and ensuring that a minimum of 90 percent of federal authorities productsively utilize at least one AI application. Furthermore, AI agents are intended to prepare administrative processes end-to-end and, where legally permissible, conclude them automatically. Crucially, the capacity for AI data centers is also projected to grow by 300 percent compared to 2025 levels.

In the context of Frontier AI, Germany intends to secure access to world-leading models while simultaneously bolstering European alternatives. To achieve this, cooperation with France and Canada is set to be significantly expanded. German industrial AI aims to excel through highly specialized models. At the same time, the state intends to serve as a strategic anchor customer, facilitating market entry for European AI providers through public contracts and pilot projects.
