Merz Demands Strict Justice Against Rioters, Separating Violence from Peaceful Protesters

CDU leader Friedrich Merz has called for a definitive application of the law against those responsible for the outbreaks of violence observed during the nationwide youth protests. According to a report in the newspaper “Bild,” which referenced the Chancellor’s speech manuscript from the CDU regional chairmen conference, Merz has warned that the “hardness of the law” will be applied.

The paper quoted Merz stating that there is no place for violence on the streets, asserting that his government will show absolutely no tolerance for such behavior. He emphasized that attacking police officers and looting businesses is an assault on freedom, a mockery of society, and an affront to the legitimate interests of young people. He concluded that the perpetrators of these crimes would certainly feel the severity of the law.

However, Merz simultaneously offered protection to the vast majority of youths who demonstrated peacefully. He noted that while the bulk of the youth had participated in orderly demonstrations, the violence and unrest only emerged as night fell. He applauded the police response, stating, “The majority of young people demonstrated peacefully; we must keep things in perspective regarding them.” He also explicitly thanked the police for their professional handling of the situation.
