Anke Rehlinger, the Minister President of Saarland and a member of the SPD, has sharply criticized the draft law put forward by Katherina Reiche, the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs (CDU), which aims to cap fuel prices. Speaking to the Tagesspiegel, Rehlinger stated that the current draft amounts to a law preventing fuel price ceilings.
The Saarland Minister President further argued that if prohibited price increases are only allowed to last three weeks before Reiche takes action, then “no one will benefit.” Additionally, she pointed out that the proposal does not align with the models implemented in Luxembourg and Belgium, a matter the federal government had apparently agreed upon. The SPD politician concluded by stating that Minister Reiche obviously has no intention of providing relief for German motorists.
