BSW Slams Zelensky Visit, Demands Halt on Ukraine Funding Amid Domestic Crisis

The BSW party sharply criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Berlin this Tuesday. According to BSW founder Sahra Wagenknecht, this visit represents “another slap in the face from Merz to his own people,” as she stated to the news portal T-Online. She claimed that by granting “new blank checks” to Zelenskyy, the government intends to impose “cuts everywhere” in Germany. Wagenknecht asserted that this aid is not winter relief, but rather “war prolongation funds” imposed at the expense of the Ukrainian population. The BSW has called for a complete stop to payments to Ukraine.

Claudia Wittig, the BSW’s co-faction chairwoman in Saxony-Anhalt, echoed this criticism. Wittig noted to T-Online that millions of German taxpayer funds flow into Ukraine daily, while simultaneously, companies are going bankrupt across Germany. She observed that increasing numbers of citizens, particularly in the eastern states, are rejecting this policy.

In mid-October, the BSW in Saxony-Anhalt first passed a symbolic motion alongside the AfD, demanding stronger peace initiatives, an end to sanctions against Russia, and a halt to military shipments and financial support for Ukraine. Wittig announced that the party intends to launch further initiatives in this area.
