CDU Proposes Wulff, Roßmann for Federal Convocation Amid Gender Debate

The CDU Niedersachsen intends to nominate former Federal President Christian Wulff and Rossmann retail chain CEO Raoul Roßmann for the Bundesversammlung (Federal Convention). According to the news magazine Focus, although the state parliament must officially select the electoral delegates based on the CDU’s recommendations, these names have been put forward.

Wulff previously served as Federal President from 2010 to 2012 and as Minister President of Lower Saxony from 2003 to 2010. Roßmann has served as the spokesperson for the management of the drugstore chain since 2021. In addition to these two, Focus reports that the CDU has nominated names such as Silke Müller, a bestselling author and former school principal, and former Minister President David McAllister.

The Bundesversammlung is scheduled to take place in Berlin on January 30th. However, it remains uncertain about the final candidates who will be voted upon. Meanwhile, CDU leader and Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stipulated this week that the next head of state must be a woman. Frank-Walter Steinmeier is barred from a third term as he has already served two presidential terms.
