According to statements by Hakan Demir, a member of the executive board of the Parliamentary Left (PL) within the SPD parliamentary group, the PL is supporting the ongoing coalition talks between the SPD, Die Linke, and the Greens in Berlin, a response to comments made by SPD leader Lars Klingbeil.
Demir, speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, argued that the recent Berlin elections produced what he described as a “progressive majority.” He stated that this electoral result now provides an opportunity to implement concrete improvements that serve the residents of the city. He emphasized that in this climate of growing inequality, soaring rental costs, and significant social unease, politics must establish social security and give citizens renewed reasons for hope.
The SPD Member of Parliament representing the Berlin constituency of Neukölln stated that coalition negotiations are the appropriate forum to openly review both common ground and differing viewpoints to determine if a sustainable foundation for a joint government can be built. The PL welcomes the serious exploration of this potential arrangement in Berlin. However, the PL executive board member stressed that while they welcome the talks, it is absolutely clear that antisemites and those who minimize terrorism must never be permitted to hold political responsibility. The PL noted that the Berlin SPD demonstrates a “clear stance against antisemitism” and expects the potential coalition partners to uphold the same commitment.
