Hong Kong Democracy Activist Joshua Wong Sentenced to Further Decade of Prison Under National Security Law

Joshua Wong, who was once the prominent face of the democracy movement in Hong Kong, has been sentenced to another ten years in prison. He was found guilty of “colluding with foreign forces” under the comprehensive National Security Law implemented by the city.

Wong is one of hundreds of activists and citizens who have been arrested since the law was introduced in 2020. Critics argue that the law has effectively silenced resistance, while authorities maintain that it is necessary to ensure “stability.”

Previously, Wong had already served six years in prison and was originally due to be released in January. However, he must now spend an additional decade behind bars. The prosecution accused Wong of working with other activists, including Nathan Law, who is currently living in exile, in an effort to secure foreign sanctions against Beijing. These alleged activities took place between July and November 2020.
