So far this year, only 7.2 million euros of the special fund have been channeled into education, childcare, and scientific infrastructure, despite a planned allocation of 1.22 billion euros. This report comes from the “Rheinische Post”, which referenced answers provided by the Federal Ministry of Finance to a written inquiry from Misbah Khan, the deputy leader of the Green party faction.
According to the Ministry’s response, the slow disbursement of these funds appears to be due to federalism. The Ministry stated that for some measures, administrative regulations and agreements between the federal government and the states were only finalized during the course of the year, requiring subsequent implementation by the respective states.
Khan described the slow flow of funds as scandalous. She argued that these figures provided yet another reason why young people are taking to the streets. The Green politician emphasized that even if there are procedural reasons preventing the allocated funds from being spent, these numbers are simply unacceptable. In her view, the investments that have been delayed this year must be made up as quickly as possible, and she suggested that 2027 should be designated as the year of education investment.
