Spahn Masken Chaos Inquiry Blocked

The Federal Government’s Drug Commissioner, Hendrik Streeck (CDU), has voiced opposition to the establishment of a parliamentary inquiry committee investigating the procurement of face masks during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically regarding the actions of former Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU).

Speaking on the “RTL Direkt” program Wednesday evening, Streeck stated he does not believe a formal inquiry is warranted. He emphasized that an existing investigative committee already exists, deeming it a more appropriate mechanism for addressing related issues and informing future crisis management strategies.

Streeck highlighted the urgent demand for face masks that characterized the initial phase of the pandemic. He recounted instances where local health authorities were forced to curtail essential procedures, such as appendectomies, due to severe shortages, underscoring the immediate need for protective equipment at the time. His comments suggest a focus on learning from past experiences to improve preparedness for future crises, prioritizing lessons related to supply chains and logistical challenges.
