Germany Misses Tournament Lead in Shock Upset

Germany’s hopes of securing the top spot in Group C of the Women’s European Championship were dashed on Saturday evening following a 4-1 defeat to Sweden. Despite a promising start with Jule Brand scoring in the 7th minute, the German team struggled to maintain their advantage.

Sweden mounted a swift response, with Stina Blackstenius equalizing in the 12th minute. Smilla Holmberg added to the pressure in the 25th minute, followed by Fridolina Rolfö’s penalty in the 34th minute, extending Sweden’s lead. Lina Hurtig cemented the victory with a goal in the 80th minute. Adding to Germany’s difficulties, Carlotta Wamser received a red card in the 31st minute.

The result leaves Germany in second place in Group C. They will face the winner of Group D – a potential matchup against France, England, or the Netherlands – in the quarter-finals next Saturday at 21:00. Sweden is scheduled to play against the second-placed team from the same group two days prior.

In the group’s other fixture, Poland secured a 3-2 victory over Denmark. Both Poland and Denmark had already confirmed their elimination from the tournament prior to this match.
