Oleksiy Makeyev, Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany, suspects Russia was responsible for a recent drone incident at Leipzig Airport. Speaking to the broadcaster Welt, Makeyev asserted that he hoped German authorities would reach the same conclusion. “Who else could it be but Russia?” he asked. He specifically referenced a near-incident involving a DHL package in Leipzig back in 2024. Makeyev further criticized Russia’s conduct, stating that Moscow has long been running a “hybrid war”-a term he emphasized highlights that Russia is not only fighting Ukraine but also targeting Europe generally.
The incident itself occurred on Wednesday night at Leipzig/Halle Airport, where a drone was sighted near a Ukrainian cargo plane. According to security circles, the drone was equipped with explosives and a detonator.
Leveraging the expertise Ukraine has acquired from its defense against Russia, Makeyev offered to assist Germany, calling it a strategic partner. He stressed that Germany should adopt Ukraine’s knowledge on how to successfully defend against drones. He noted that Ukraine is not asking for aid, as its practical experience is unique and profound. Furthermore, Ukraine offered to share insights across various sectors-including military, fire services, and healthcare-believing this contribution serves the wider European interest.
