East German Judges on Top Court? A Growing Push

A call for greater representation of judges from eastern Germany has been voiced by the Left faction within the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament. Eva von Angern, parliamentary group leader, highlighted a perceived imbalance in the composition of key federal institutions, nearly 35 years after German reunification. The focus of this concern is particularly directed towards the Federal Constitutional Court.

Von Angern emphasized that the underrepresentation of citizens from eastern Germany extends beyond the national level, also impacting leadership positions within Saxony-Anhalt itself. She advocated for a sustained, long-term strategy to address this disparity, arguing that symbolic commitments to equality are insufficient. Concrete shifts in the makeup of leadership bodies are now required.

The Left party intends to continue pushing for this objective both at the federal and state level. Concerns were raised regarding the current level of engagement from the state government in ensuring judges from Saxony-Anhalt are considered for appointments to the highest courts. The party believes a more proactive approach is needed to promote a more equitable representation.
