Verfassungsrichterin Shines: Did She Win the Debate?

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) has lauded the performance of their nominated candidate for the Federal Constitutional Court, Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf, during her appearance on the ZDF program “Markus Lanz”. SPD parliamentary group deputy leader Wiebke Esdar told “Der Spiegel” that Brosius-Gersdorf presented “her positions objectively, impressively and persuasively” emphasizing her “undisputed scientific expertise.

Esdar expressed hope that the ensuing debate would be conducted at a “more objective level”. She cautioned that those seeking to avoid further damage to the reputation of the Federal Constitutional Court should refrain from “unsubstantiated accusations and falsehoods.

Brosius-Gersdorf was nominated for the court by the SPD. Despite a coalition agreement supporting her candidacy, her selection was blocked last Friday due to opposition from the Union faction. During Tuesday evening’s broadcast, the professor from Potsdam affirmed her continued interest in the nomination, while also indicating that she would reconsider if her candidacy posed a threat to the court’s standing.

SPD parliamentarian Sebastian Roloff highlighted Brosius-Gersdorf’s willingness to engage in public debate as a positive attribute. He described her appearance as “highly confident” and noted that frequently misrepresented quotes could be contextualized. Roloff suggested that the Union faction would benefit from a more thorough examination of her actual statements, particularly given the nature of previous discourse.
