Amid growing criticism, particularly following a pediatrician’s strong remarks directed at Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz during a joint appearance on an RTL program, Federal Minister of Education Karin Prien (CDU) has issued a warning about the deterioration of political debate.
Prien told the newspaper “Bild” that the country is facing significant challenges-both internal and external. She stressed that one of these challenges is figuring out how to secure the social state for the future without losing social cohesion.
According to Prien, politics, as well as the dialogue between citizens and politicians, risks becoming impossible if every reform proposal challenging the status quo is immediately dismissed as hateful or contemptuous. She warned of the even worse situation where the person proposing the reform is personally slandered. She believes conversations must remain civilized and respectful, allowing for the exchange of viewpoints without resorting to belittling the other party.
Commenting on aggressive communication styles, Prien stated that those who overwhelm others with maximal accusations are doing nothing beneficial for the discussion and are unlikely to achieve anything constructive. Instead, she urged confidence in the nation’s strengths, encouraging people to tackle issues with optimism, citing past success stories like the economic miracle and reunification-both achieving prosperity for all in earlier German history.
