Brosius-Gersdorf: Germans Oppose Her Candidacy Withdrawal

A recent survey indicates strong public opposition to calls for Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf to withdraw her candidacy for the Federal Constitutional Court. Conducted by Forsa for “Der Stern” magazine, the poll reveals that 57 percent of respondents disagree with the demand, primarily voiced by members of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU). Twenty-four percent believe Brosius-Gersdorf should voluntarily step aside, while 19 percent expressed no opinion.

The results highlight a noteworthy divergence in perspectives across the political spectrum. Despite the call for withdrawal originating from CDU and CSU circles, only 23 percent of supporters of these parties favor Brosius-Gersdorf’s resignation, with a substantial 59 percent opposing it. Similar sentiments prevail among voters of other major parties: 82 percent of SPD supporters, 84 percent of Green Party voters and 74 percent of Left Party voters are against her withdrawal. Conversely, a majority (55 percent) of AfD supporters advocate for Brosius-Gersdorf to forego her candidacy, with only 28 percent opposing this view.

The public discussion surrounding the nomination has also addressed the potential influence of gender dynamics. Support for Brosius-Gersdorf to maintain her candidacy is particularly robust among women, with 60 percent expressing approval. However, a clear majority of men (54 percent) also reject calls for her withdrawal.

The data was collected via telephone interviews on July 17th and 18th, surveying a base of 1,000 respondents.
