German Leader Condemns Politician’s LGBTQ+ Comments

The Federal Anti-Discrimination Commissioner, Ferda Ataman, has voiced strong criticism regarding the approach of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU) parties concerning LGBTQI+ issues.

Ataman’s remarks, conveyed to the “Wochentaz” newspaper, focused on the impact of political rhetoric and recent decisions. She highlighted the potential harm of comparing the concerns of LGBTQI+ individuals to a circus tent, especially given the increasing prevalence of right-wing extremism and hate speech directed at minority groups within parliamentary settings.

The criticism arises from a rising number of cases reported to the Federal Anti-Discrimination Office, coupled with incidents of attacks on Pride (CSD) parades and LGBTQI+ individuals. Despite this backdrop, Bundestag President Julia Klöckner (CDU) recently ordered that a rainbow flag no longer be flown at the Reichstag building. This decision was further complicated when Chancellor Friedrich Merz joined the subsequent public debate with the comment, “The Bundestag is not a circus tent.

Ataman warned that the actions and statements of government officials reverberate throughout society. She also noted that instances of resentment and discrimination were previously observed within the Bundestag, even during the tenure of the previous coalition government. “A Bundestag debate about asylum policy, for example, has an impact not only on refugees, but on all people who are perceived as foreigners” she stated.

Ataman also condemned the attacks targeting Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf, a candidate for the Federal Constitutional Court. She asserted that Brosius-Gersdorf, a jurist widely regarded as holding more conservative views within her field, was unfairly portrayed and discredited as a left-wing activist. Ataman described this as a recurring pattern: “People who are to be appointed to responsible positions are systematically dismantled by alleging a supposedly questionable political agenda”.
