EU Taxes: Söder Opposes New European Levies

Following a recently agreed customs deal between the United States and the European Union, Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder (CSU) has reiterated his opposition to the introduction of additional taxes at the EU level.

Söder expressed relief on Monday via social media, stating the customs agreement averted a potentially detrimental outcome. However, he cautioned that the situation has become more challenging, particularly for the automotive industry. He underscored the necessity of avoiding further financial burdens, specifically rejecting plans currently under consideration by the EU for new taxes.

Instead, Söder argued for measures to offset the impact of increased tariffs, specifically highlighting the need to reduce electricity prices. He suggested the implementation of an industrial electricity price for sectors including the chemical and automotive industries as a potential solution.
