German Politicians Call for EU Sanctions Against Extreme Israeli Minister Ben-Gvir

Norbert Röttgen, a CDU foreign policy expert, called for a more nuanced approach to Israel following recent comments made by Israeli Police Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. Speaking to the FAZ, Röttgen described Ben-Gvir as a “disdainful extremist” who is reiterating his extremist views. He stated that it is overdue for the European Union to impose personal sanctions on Ben-Gvir.

Röttgen expressed shock that such an individual holds a position in the Israeli government and is responsible for policing. He believes this situation necessitates that Germany adopts a more detailed and demanding stance toward Israeli policy than it has historically taken. This criticism comes after Ben-Gvir promoted, during a podcast, the killing of even more Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Ralf Stegner, a SPD foreign policy spokesperson, also strongly criticized the minister’s remarks. Telling the FAZ, Stegner argued that anyone who supports Israel must “clearly and sharply advocate a policy that can never bring security or peace to Israel.” He further asserted that Germany, especially as an ally of Israel, must not withdraw from international solidarity when it comes to the internationally unlawful occupation and settlement policies in Gaza and the West Bank.
