The ADAC has strongly criticized the poor condition of many unmanaged service areas located along Germany’s autobahns. In a recent test, the motoring association reported that nearly half of these rest areas received ratings of “deficient” or “very deficient,” indicating a significant drop in quality compared to 2022. Specifically, the percentage of rest areas rated as good fell drastically from 40 percent in 2022 to just 18 percent. None of the inspected locations managed to achieve a “very good” rating.
The biggest weakness identified was the sanitary facilities. Sixty-two percent of the service areas received a “deficient” or “very deficient” rating in this category. At six of the locations, toilets were completely closed, leading to a complete or partial failure in the inspection. Furthermore, basic amenities such as soap dispensers or working hand dryers were frequently missing, and toilet paper was often unavailable. The structural condition and equipment in the barrier-free toilets also often failed to meet expectations.
Although the rest areas performed relatively better in the “Traffic and Parking” category, there still needed improvements regarding parking spaces for towing vehicles, trailers, and campers. Overall, the outdoor areas only reached a moderate standard due to a noticeable lack of quality of stay. According to the ADAC, the sense of safety on these service areas also left much to be desired, partly because of inadequate lighting and the absence of emergency call equipment.
