AfD Chief Chrupalla Holds Off on BSW Cooperation, Citing Lack of Unity and Awaiting Election Results

AfD leader Tino Chrupalla is keeping a low profile regarding the potential collaboration between his party and the BSW following the autumn state elections. This comes after the BSW sent a letter to the AfD leadership, explicitly rejecting the concept of a “firewall” (brandmauer).

According to Chrupalla, speaking on Deutschlandfunk, if anyone wants to engage with the AfD, they should meet with those they are officially dealing with. However, he stated that they must first await the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt. He emphasized that the outcome of those elections-including whether the BSW or the SPD enters the state parliament, and how the majority distribution looks-must be factored in.

Chrupalla added that the BSW itself needs to establish internal consistency. “For example, the BSW speaks differently in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern than it does in Thuringia,” the AfD chief commented, noting that he sees “no uniformity yet.” He expressed regret that the BSW made the declaration public in a letter without first consulting the AfD chairpersons internally and having a private discussion first.

Ultimately, Chrupalla indicated that the AfD hopes to achieve an absolute majority in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern or Saxony-Anhalt and thus avoid the need for a coalition partner.
