AfD jumps ahead of CDU/CSU in poll amidst calls for party ban and coalition limits

According to the current “Sunday Trend” survey released by the Insa institute for “Bild am Sonntag”, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) leads the Union party with a margin of eight percentage points. The opinions research institute conducts these weekly surveys.

The AfD remains steady at 29 percent. However, CDU/CSU has lost one point and now registers at 21 percent. For the Social Democratic Party (SPD), there is a slight increase of one point, bringing their total to 13 percent. The Greens also hold at 13 percent. The Left party garnered 10 percent, while the BSW improved by one point to reach 4 percent. Similarly, the FDP remains at 4 percent. Other parties collectively achieved 6 percent, down from a previous result of seven percent.

Regarding a potential ban on the AfD, public opinion is divided. Forty percent of respondents lean toward supporting a ban, while 45 percent are more opposed to it. Fifteen percent did not provide an answer. Furthermore, when asked about the concept of a “firewall” (Brandmauer)-referring to Union and SPD rejecting any collaboration or coalition with the AfD-42 percent believe this stance is likely correct, compared to 39 percent who find it questionable. Nineteen percent were undecided or did not answer.

For these specific questions concerning the AfD, Insa surveyed 1,005 individuals between July 2 and July 3. The broader “Sunday Trend” poll, which asked how people would vote if a federal election were held the following Sunday, surveyed 1,205 people from June 29 to July 3.
