AfD Loses Ground in Polls But Remains Germany’s Strongest Political Force

According to the latest Yougov survey, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) has seen a noticeable dip compared to last month, although it retains its position as the strongest political force. If a federal election were held next Sunday, the poll indicates that 27 percent of German voters would choose the AfD, a two-percentage-point decrease from June.

The Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) remains stable at 20 percent, narrowing the gap to seven percentage points. The Greens occupy third place with an unchanged 14 percent. The Social Democratic Party (SPD) and Die Linke are tied at 12 percent, both showing no change from the previous month. The Free Democratic Party (FDP) holds steady at 5 percent, while the BSW remains at 4 percent. Six percent of voters chose other parties.

Regarding the state of the country, three out of four citizens (74 percent) believe that Germany is heading in the wrong direction generally. This view is particularly strong among AfD voters (93 percent) and Left Party voters (84 percent), but majorities also hold this belief among Greens (69 percent), the SPD (63 percent), and the Union (58 percent).

Slightly more than half of the population (55 percent) feels that the country requires profound reforms. A majority in every polled group agrees with this assessment (AfD: 67 percent; CDU/CSU: 57 percent; Left Party: 55 percent; Greens: 50 percent; SPD: 49 percent).

However, public support for the federal government’s reform package remains low. Only one in ten voters (13 percent) believes the package is necessary and deserves support. Furthermore, 27 percent find the reforms fundamentally necessary but express doubts about their implementation. Close to half of the citizens (45 percent) feel the reforms are moving in the wrong direction. Nine percent stated they could not assess the reforms, and five percent were undecided or provided no answer.

Among voters, those associated with the AfD (65 percent) and the Left Party (64 percent) are most likely to believe the reform package is flawed. The opposition is notably lower among Greens (44 percent) and the SPD (40 percent), while nearly a third of CDU/CSU voters (30 percent) believe the reforms are heading in the wrong direction.

Yougov conducted the survey online between July 10th and July 13th, interviewing 2,230 people. Of those who participated in the “Sunday Question” portion, 1,827 completed the survey.
