Airport Federation Urges Government to Implement Fuel Tax Cut to Avert Airline Flight Cuts

The Airport Association (ADV) is pressuring the federal government to act due to the sharp rise in oil prices and increasing concerns regarding kerosene supplies. Ralph Beisel, the Chief Executive Officer of the Association of German Airports (ADV), told the news magazine Focus that the ADV demands a “fuel discount for air travel” through a temporary suspension of the aviation tax to prevent flight cancellations.

Regarding the outcome of the kerosene summit held on Monday at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Beisel remained reserved. While acknowledging that the meeting of energy and aviation industry representatives represented an “important first step” taken by the federal government, he stressed that concrete support measures for airlines and airports were still lacking. He stated that he expects the government to act swiftly on this matter.

Meanwhile, Lufthansa announced on Wednesday that it plans to cut 20,000 short-haul flights, effective until October, hoping to save 40,000 tons of kerosene. The dramatic increase in kerosene prices, which have doubled since the start of the Iran War, is putting many airlines into a difficult financial position.
