District chairmen of the Saxon Union have issued a letter to Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) and CDU General Secretary Franziska Hoppermann, demanding a “ruthless analysis” of the party’s current situation.
Florian Oest, a Saxon CDU Member of Parliament and one of the signatories to the letter, pointed out that the Union is currently polling around 20 percent, a figure which raises serious questions about whether the CDU remains a mass party. Oest emphasized that the primary objective must be finding solutions to national problems, rather than engaging in internal staff debates. He urged that the district chairmen convene immediately to determine how the party can regain its effectiveness, rather than waiting for the meeting originally planned for early November.
According to Oest, Merz must first decide if he has the conviction necessary to lead this renewed mobilization. He argued forcefully that both the federal government and the CDU in Germany require a new start and greater substance.
As the CDU chair for the Görlitz district and a district councilor, Oest concluded by stating that the focus must ultimately come down to five key policy areas: affordable energy, reduced regulation, lower payroll costs, and increased investment in infrastructure and technological advancement. He stressed that foundational decisions must be made on these issues now.
