Alexander Schott took over the position of President of the Federal Aviation Office (LBA) in Braunschweig on August 1st. According to a statement from the Federal Ministry of Transport released on Monday, he succeeded Jörg Werner Mendel, who retired into a phase of part-time early retirement at the end of January.
Steffen Bilger, the head of the ministry, emphasized that the Federal Aviation Office is a “pillar” of German aviation. He described Schott as a “proven expert in administration and innovation” who will be responsible for overseeing the strategic development of the LBA.
Schott thanked the federal ministry for the confidence placed in him and expressed enthusiasm for his new responsibilities. He noted that the aviation sector is undergoing a period of “profound change,” marked by “digitalization, innovation, sustainability, and ensuring the highest safety standards.” Working alongside the employees of the Federal Aviation Office, he plans to drive the agency’s development and contribute to the future resilience of German aviation.
Schott is the eighth director of the LBA since its establishment nearly 72 years ago. Prior to this role, the lawyer served at the Federal Ministry of Defence, where he held the position of Director for Research and Innovation, responsible for the cyber and AI concepts for the armed forces.
