Auswärtiges Amt summons Iranian ambassador over foiled terror plot targeting Jewish leaders in Germany

Following the conviction of alleged Iranian spies in Hamburg for planning terrorist attacks, the Foreign Office has summoned the Iranian ambassador. The ministry announced via the X short-message service on Monday that it tolerates no attacks on Jewish life or those who defend it, stating, “Nowhere, especially not in Germany.” The ministry issued a severe condemnation of Iran’s activities, declaring, “We condemn Iran’s activities in the strongest possible terms. We will not allow Iran to threaten our liberal society.”

This action came after the Foreign Office summoned the Iranian ambassador to address the “malignant attempts at terrorist attacks” targeting Josef Schuster and Volker Beck, noting that these attacks will face legal consequences.

The Foreign Office further mentioned past successful efforts, highlighting that they campaigned for the leaders of Iranian attacks globally and suppressors of Iranian civilians, such as the Revolutionary Guards, to finally be listed as terrorist organizations within the EU.

The court decision that prompted the diplomatic response occurred last week when the Hanseatic High Court in Hamburg sentenced one Iranian spy to a 15-year prison term for his involvement in planning attacks. An alleged accomplice faces a sentence of four and a half years. The main defendant is accused of planning and preparing arson and murder attacks in Germany as an agent of the Iranian regime. The intended targets reportedly included Volker Beck, President of the German-Israeli Society, and Josef Schuster, President of the Central Council of Jews.
