Berlin CDU Candidate Touts Landlord Fund to Aid Tenants Fighting Excessive Rent

Berlin CDU candidate Stefan Evers has proposed that major housing companies should establish a dedicated fund to cover legal procedural costs for tenants who challenge excessively high rents. According to “Der Tagesspiegel”, Evers said that such a voluntary emergency aid fund would send a powerful signal. While acknowledging that it would not solve every issue, he believes it could help de-escalate tensions.

Evers argued that rental companies should support tenants with litigation costs in particularly severe cases involving tenancy law violations. He noted that reputable landlords would have a strong vested interest in ensuring that unscrupulous operators-the “black sheep”-are removed from the industry.

This proposal comes as Berlin prepares for new elections to the Abgeordnetenhaus on September 20. Following incumbent Mayor Kai Wegner’s withdrawal from the CDU leadership candidacy, Stefan Evers, currently the finance senator and the party’s new provisional state chairman, is leading the party through the campaign.
