Berlin Warns Federal Government of Police Cuts if Security Funding is Not Increased

Berlin’s Interior Senator, Iris Spranger (SPD), has demanded increased funding from the federal government to cover security duties within the capital. She told the “Tagesspiegel” (Friday edition) that if the federal government fails to provide the necessary payments, the scope of police protection for federal properties would need to be carefully reviewed.

Currently, preliminary discussions are underway regarding a renewal of the capital agreement, which is set to expire in its current form at the end of 2027. Spranger stated that the existing annual allocation of 120 million euros is insufficient and that the federal government must contribute more money to the security operations of the federal capital.

The politician noted that, until now, Berlin has effectively covered the gap. She reported that 180 million euros was spent annually by the city. She stressed that the minimum amount required for all duties in the federal capital-including object and personnel protection-is 373 million euros.

This increased requirement is not merely due to the heightened demands on the police or the rising costs associated with protests that affect federal institutions. It also covers the essential object protection of the Bundestag, various ministries, and embassies, alongside the security of protected persons.
