The federal government’s planned AI Safety Institute (AISI) is set to be located in Berlin, according to the newsletter “Technology and AI” from “Politico”. This report, which cites several individuals familiar with the decision, indicates that the official announcement will take place early next week.
This decision means that Saarbrücken and Munich will not secure the institute. Both cities had been actively campaigning for the AISI’s establishment over recent weeks, with parts of the regional governments in Saarland and Bavaria having repeatedly urged the federal government to locate the institute within their respective states.
The final location decision was made with the input of the Digital Ministry, the Interior Ministry, and the Federal Chancellery. The choice of Berlin is likely due to the objective of ensuring the institute maintains the closest possible connection to the work of the federal government.
Moving forward, the AISI is tasked with advising the federal government on issues surrounding Artificial Intelligence, including security matters and its potential economic benefits. To accomplish this mandate, the institute plans to recruit leading personnel, sourcing expertise both nationally and internationally.
