In case of a victory in the Berlin House of Representatives election, The Left Party has announced an initiative targeting high fuel prices. According to Linken top candidate Elif Eralp, should she be elected as Governing Mayor, she plans to champion a special windfall tax on companies affected by the crisis when sitting in the Bundesrat. Furthermore, she will advocate for implementing a cap on gas prices. This measure, she stated to the “Welt,” aims to support struggling individuals such as single parents commuting to work, night-shift caregivers, and craftspeople using vans, protecting them from the burden of rising costs. Eralp emphasized that the “crisis profits of the oil corporations must be seized and used to relieve the burden on people.” She asserted that the high fuel prices should not fall solely on the citizens while the corporations continue to profit; otherwise, the costs are ultimately borne by families, caregivers, artisans, and delivery drivers. Conversely, The Left Party expects no relief from the current black-red federal government or the Chancellor. Eralp criticized Friedrich Merz and his CDU, claiming they have abandoned citizens facing rising prices and have lost touch with everyday life. The Linken pledged that it would not leave the people who keep the city running unsupported.
