Bilger Clarifies Merz’s Critique: Criticism of SPD Linked to Specific Infrastructure Bill, Not General Coalition Discontent

Steffen Bilger, the parliamentary director for the CDU’s parliamentary group in the Bundestag, has sought to contextualize what he considers an alleged outburst by the Chancellor during a party meeting. According to a report by the “Rheinische Post”, the CDU leader, Merz, reportedly stated that his patience had run out, even with the social democrats, due to the blockage of the Infrastructure Future Act, which aims to accelerate major construction projects. However, Bilger clarified to “Die Welt” that this frustration was specifically tied to the infrastructure legislation and was not intended as a general criticism of the SPD.

Bilger criticized the public release of quotes from internal party meetings, describing it as “really bad.” He emphasized that the comments were narrowly focused on a concrete law-not a broad attack on their coalition partner.

Despite the media focus on tensions, Bilger does not see an underlying fundamental disagreement bubbling up right before the upcoming coalition meeting with social partners. While he admitted there might be individual points of criticism directed at the SPD, he stressed that the overall sentiment within the Union remains one of optimism, driven by the shared goal of achieving results with the SPD. He recommended that greater calmness be observed, and that this patience should also extend to how party meetings are reported.
