Bremen Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte (SPD) has criticized the Pension Commission, arguing that it appears unwilling to establish binding regulations regarding the inclusion of civil servants in the statutory pension system. While noting that the Commission’s work cannot be properly assessed until the final report is available, Bovenschulte stated to “Spiegel” that it already seems clear that the Commission has failed to demonstrate the necessary resolve, particularly concerning the integration of various groups into public pension coverage.
The SPD politician supported the Commission’s efforts to address solo self-employed individuals but strongly criticized the apparent delay in incorporating civil servants. He argued that such a delay is unacceptable. Bovenschulte demanded that there be a definitive starting date for newly appointed civil servants to be brought into the statutory pension insurance framework. If this threshold is not met, he warns that the historical opportunity to finally dismantle the two-tier system of old-age security will be missed.
