The internal dispute within the BSW party in Thuringia appears to be escalating. According to MDR, at least nine more members are reportedly planning to resign from the state parliament faction and possibly the party itself on Friday. This group is said to include Vice-Minister President Katja Wolf. Should this happen, the BSW would lose its status as a faction in the state parliament. Currently, the BSW is part of the so-called blackberry coalition in Thuringia, alongside the CDU and SPD, none of which hold an independent majority in the state parliament.
This escalation follows earlier resignations. On Monday, Matthias Herzog announced his departure from the party, though he intends to remain in the faction as an unaffiliated representative. Separately, on Wednesday, Stefan Wogawa, along with Matthias Herzog and Dirk Hoffmeister, formally resigned from both the party and the faction. These three former BSW politicians plan to form a parliamentary group with a newly established party called “Deine Stimme zählt.”
The root of the problem is a conflict between the federal BSW party and its Thuringian chapter. The federal BSW had previously exerted pressure on its colleagues in Thuringia to leave the coalition after Minister President Mario Voigt (CDU) faced scrutiny over his doctoral thesis.
