Building Industry: Criticism Targets Government’s Slow Pace Despite Promises for Housing and Infrastructure

The German construction industry has criticized the ruling coalition government for failing to take sufficient action regarding both housing construction and infrastructure development. According to an analysis of the first year of the Merz cabinet, the industry noted that the government remains in an announcement phase rather than entering an active implementation phase.

This assessment comes from the German Construction Industry’s main association (HDB), which reported to the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland”. Speaking immediately before the Construction Industry Day, HDB Managing Director Tim-Oliver Müller stated: “The federal government sends out signals, and the message we receive is clear: the Black-Red coalition wants to advance housing construction and finally build more infrastructure. The messages sound promising, and we want to believe them-but the government is making this process difficult for us”.

Müller observed that the government appears paralyzed, despite the fact that “many good things” were agreed upon in the coalition agreement. He pointed out the palpable disappointment in the delay of the anticipated “major reform turbo”-a reform expected not just by large segments of the public, but also by the construction sector itself.

The sector is currently facing insufficient orders in the infrastructure area, while concerns over adequate financing from supporting bodies are increasing.
