Bundeswehr Eyes Large-Scale A400M Upgrade to Boost Military Capabilities

The aircraft manufacturer Airbus might secure an additional order from the German Armed Forces. According to reports citing industry circles, discussions are currently underway regarding the purchase of between 15 and 20 new A400M military transport aircraft.

These turboprop planes could take on new roles within the Bundeswehr, including potentially being developed to carry drones or cruise missiles. Industry sources suggest that this would allow the A400M to play a significant role in deterrence in the future.

Funding for such a purchase package is already in place; earlier this July, the Bundestag budget committee approved authorization appropriations totaling 3.59 billion euros available until 2032, a substantial increase from the previous framework of around 1.4 billion euros.

However, neither Airbus Defence and Space nor the Ministry of Defence has officially commented on the ongoing talks, though sources indicate discussions are set to continue in the second half of the year.

It is worth noting that the Luftwaffe has officially met its current requirements. The air force received the final of its initial order of 53 A400Ms in April, making Germany by far the largest operator of the A400M globally. Though a total of 138 units have been built, primarily for European nations, the Bundeswehr does not intend to expand its fleet, but rather to replace older machines with brand-new aircraft.
