Jan-Marco Luczak, the construction policy spokesperson for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, is calling for increased climate adaptation in the construction sector in response to the current heatwave, while simultaneously cautioning against setting overly demanding standards.
Speaking to RTL and ntv, Luczak acknowledged the significant strain the recent high temperatures are placing on the populace. He stressed that climate technology is particularly urgent in acute care settings, stating, “Above all, we must ensure that hospitals can be equipped with more air conditioning units.”
He emphasized that climate adaptation must be integrated into new construction projects, but it should not be prioritized over affordability. Luczak pointed out that when building new structures, planners must consider heat protection and adequate insulation for residential buildings. However, he immediately balanced this point by reiterating the constraint of cost. “We are talking about costs. And at the same time, we are talking about affordable rents. Both things must be reconciled; we cannot pursue either point absolutely.”
