CDU Calls for Direct Citizen Payments to Supplement Fuel Discounts Amid Gas Price Crisis

Dennis Radtke, the head of the CDU’s Social Wing (CDA), has urged the federal government to rapidly establish the necessary framework for direct citizen payments once the general fuel discount takes effect. While acknowledging the introduction of the tank discount, Radtke told Funke-Mediengruppe newspapers that “it is correct that the tank discount is coming. Those who depend on their cars must be relieved of the burden of high fuel prices.”

However, he stressed the crucial need for the state to be prepared for future crises, stating, “The key is that when the next crisis hits, we are not starting from scratch, but that the state is capable of acting.” Consequently, the announced mechanism for direct payments must be implemented promptly. The CDA leader emphasized that swift support must be available, particularly for people with small and medium incomes, ensuring that aid truly reaches them.

The new fuel discount is set to start on October 1st, reducing the tax burden per liter of diesel or gasoline by nearly 17 cents. Radtke clarified that all consumers will benefit, noting that the impact is not limited to commuters. Furthermore, he pointed out that the logistics industry is facing considerable cost pressure; rising fuel prices directly affect the sector and ultimately translate into higher prices for consumers.
