Alexander Throm, the internal policy spokesperson for the CDU/CSU union faction, has called for harsher measures against antisemitism. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, Throm stated that the current situation cannot be tolerated if Jewish citizens in Germany feel unsafe. This concern is highlighted by a recent survey showing that over two-thirds of German Jewish communities perceive the country as less secure since the Hamas attack on Israel. He specifically demanded that antisemitism originating from Muslim communities be more severely penalized.
Throm asserted that displays of hatred toward Israel, which he frequently sees on German streets, do not qualify as legitimate criticism but rather as antisemitism directed at Israel. Furthermore, he stated that anyone who denies Israel’s right to exist should lose their chances of acquiring German citizenship. He pressed for stricter enforcement of existing laws and rules.
In other statements, Throm acknowledged the existing high level of protection for Jewish institutions, expressing gratitude for this stability and suggesting that Germany must maintain this high standard. For foreign nationals involved in antisemitic crimes, he confirmed that a rule-based removal procedure, as stipulated in the coalition agreement, will be implemented. Concluding his remarks, Throm emphasized, “In a time when the Jewish community is most vulnerable, it deserves our full solidarity”.
